After we left Buenos Aires, we were expecting Montevideo to be really nice, and looked forward to this next stop. It was so close. We did not even have a sea day in between.
When we got to Montevideo we found a walking mall.
But unlike BA, this area was dirty. We even saw a man walking his dog on the cobble stones of the mall, and just left the poop there. There was lots of other deposits around also. There must be some way the droppings are picked up or it would be knee high by now.
Anyway, we walked to a small park and noticed someone taking pictures up a tree. So, of course we asked, OK Arleen asked. There were green parrots there. They are the equivalent of lorikeets. Loud….!
Then we walked on to another square where the old presidential palace was. It had been subdivided into apartments and shops. You could see parts of the old grand staircase and huge entry way. But walls divided it into small shops. What a shame. At least the 17 story building still exists and maybe someday it will be restored.
In the next square is the monument to San Martin, the father of Uruguay’s independence. He is buried under the monument. It is a very dignified display.

We also saw a beautiful Cathedral. Of course we went in and took some pictures.

All of Montevideo was not dirty or had unemployed looking people on it. See there were many beautiful flowers, too.
All in all, Montevideo was not bad. It just palled by comparison to Buenos Aires.

The man in the Walking Market POOPED IN THE STREET??? That seems more disturbing than him not picking it up.
No worries though. You missed the austere sign a couple panels down from "Protector de los Pueblos Libres" called, "Limpiador de la Caca del Perro."
