LA SERENA, CHILE

1 21

After taking a taxi with another couple, we got to La Serena.  It is a nice town that we found very clean and has lots of shops, both modern and small town like….little shops for the locals.

We saw this picture of Duane on a building.

We went to the archeological museum in La Serena.  There is a site south of town, but it is over 80 miles away, and we were too scared to risk missing the ship.  So, the museum would have to do.

It is  very  interesting how similar the artifacts are to our native tribes artifacts.  The bowl below, for example.  This looks very much like a Navajo or Hopi wedding vase.  We couldn’t tell what it was used for here.  All the signs are in Spanish.  Even though Arleen’s Spanish is getting better, better than terrible is still not very good.;)

This design did not look familiar.

We have seen many manos and mattattes before.
They were used all over the world by natives to grind corn and other things.  Besides food they were used to grind plants and rocks for coloring and making pottery.  Never have we seen such a large mano.  The mano is the part that is held in the had and used to grind the item.  That is Duane’s large hand in the picture.  We could only guess that instead of picking up the mano, it may have been rocked back and forth to grind.  That’s our best guess.

Outside the museum was this mom and 2 pups.  Couldn’t resist taking and sharing the picture.

In La Serena there are lots of street artists.  Here is one.  You cannot tell, but the ball on the seals nose is turning.

This is not for tourists.  This is where the lesser earning locals shop.  I would have loved to spend all day there,  buy noooo.

About 3 blocks from this area were modern city shops.  These were more interesting.  We also went to a park where a band was playing jazz.  Here we are in Chile listening to jazz, a music started in the US.

I almost said music from America.  That is very inappropriate.  South Americans are Americans too.  So it is more proper to say we are from the US (Estados Unidos)
